- indicator potential of aquatic insects (especially chironomids) in present and past environmental changes
- high-mountain and arctic aquatic ecosystems: alpine lakes, glacier-fed streams
- bioindication of environmental changes: climate change, eutrophication, acidification
- taxonomy, biology and ecology of Chironomidae; identification of larvae and pupae
