Abstract
On September 7th, 2023 died RNDr. Aleš Toman at the age of 67. Zoologist, animal populariser and protector, traveller, photographer... He was born on September 1th, 1956. After graduating from the Faculty of Science of Palacký University in Olomouc, he started his career in the Museum Vysočiny (Highlands) in Jihlava. From 1989 Aleš worked 15 years in the Otter and Fauna Protection Station in Pavlov near Ledeč nad Sázavou. He was a members of the IUCN Otter Specialist Group and established intensive cooperation with otter conservation organisations around the world. Later he worked in Jihlava Zoo, in the Plzeň Zoo, and then as the head of the municipal shelter for abandoned animals in Jihlava. His great love was Africa, where he travelled several times as a popular guide on natural history expeditions. Aleš was not only an excellent zoologist, but also a person. Full of energy, optimism with an eternal smile on his face, who enjoyed life to the fullest.
