ANOTÁCIA
Climate change is posing increasing challenges in urban areas. This includes a mounting frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall leading to flooding. In this talk, we will discuss the potential of so-called Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) as a promising alternative to pipe-based systems to address these increasing threats and provide climate resilience. SuDS are nature-based solutions that use and mimic natural processes (infiltration, evapotranspiration, filtration, retention, reuse) to handle stormwater. Their use is argued to not only constitute a change in the technical management of stormwater but to have the capacity to open up a new paradigm involving both social and technical changes required for sustainability. SuDS adoption asks for new perspectives, practices, and decision-making procedures. During the talk, different SuDS solutions and approaches will be critically discussed, as well as social enablers and challenges impacting change. Recommendations upon pathways for future change will be provided. These will be based on learning from examples of best management practices.
