ANOTÁCIA
Research on endemism in sessile organisms can output a more insightful understanding of a region’s biotic component dynamic in space and time and the putative factors driving it. Nowhere is endemism phenomenon more prominent than in the biggest evolutionary laboratories: islands and mountains (acting as sky islands). In Europe, the Carpathian Mountains are a well-known centre of endemism, harbouring a high number of endemic plant species. Biogeographic analysis is dependent on scale and units. We will thus explore how different spatial (artificial and natural Operational Geographic Units) and temporal scales, different evolutionary units (species and haplotypes) and various methodological approaches (analysis of diversity and cladistics analysis) in the research on plant endemism can help us gain a more comprehensive understanding of the biogeography in the South-Eastern Carpathians. Furthermore, we will highlight potential consequences of results in optimizing nature conservation. Finally, we will discuss the current state-of-knowledge and future prospects on the topic based on an existing regional research initiative, the Carpathian Research Network Consortium.
