HISTORIC SITES OF COPPER AND MERCURY MINING NEAR BANSKÁ BYSTRICA
Abstract:
Geographically, geologically and historically, the area of central Slovakia belongs to the most in-teresting and the most important regions. The geology of the surroundings of Banská Bystrica and the entire central Slovak region has the typical characteristics of a West Carpathian structure. Mas-sifs of crystalline basements, Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sediments of its cover, complete sequence of nappe units, sedimentary formations, volcanic complexes of Tertiary and covering formations of Quaternary figures are present. Interesting natural creations of both endogenous and exogenous processes can be found in several places. The whole area is historically known for intensive mining of copper, silver, gold, antimony and polymetallic ores as well as making and production of copper, gold, silver, lead and zinc. The area is rich in a large number of abandoned mine works with several interesting findings of various minerals, some of which have been described here for the first time in the world.
